About the tournament

We wish you lots of fun watching and enjoying:

What is the Schmelz Tournament?

Since 1993, the sports facility Auf der Schmelz becomes the hotspot for Europe’s handball youth every August: Youth teams from Austria and many neighboring countries compete for three days on eight artificial turf fields for trophies – finals in the Wiener Stadthalle B included. Pure handball, international flair, and festival atmosphere in one.

Objective

Handball is far more than a sport – it is a social learning field. The International Schmelz Tournament therefore pursues three core objectives:

Promote youth, strengthen community
Team sports convey team spirit, fairness, and responsibility. The tournament annually gives around 600 young people the stage to experience exactly these values in competition.

Connect cultures
Teams from more than 25 countries – from Ireland to Croatia, from Nigeria to Lithuania – get to know each other in Vienna. Workshops and exhibitions, designed by students of GRG Schmelz, turn “opponents” into new friends.

Consistent quality expansion
The organizers aim to establish the best European youth handball tournament on Austrian soil. To achieve this, the game operations, infrastructure, and supporting program are improved every year – from live streams to sustainable catering concepts. Anyone who wants to help – as a volunteer, sponsor, or with donations in kind – is warmly invited to accompany this journey.

With this triad of sport, education, and international understanding, the Schmelz Tournament has been making an important contribution to an active, open Europe since 1993 – and aims to set standards in the future as well.
